Chris Jones – Chair of Governors

I have spent the majority of my career in leadership positions, primarily as a senior police officer and more recently overseeing the delivery of business and technology change within the finance sector. I have extensive knowledge and experience of leadership, often under the most challenging circumstances, and a broad base of experience in the management of strategic change and financial accounting within both the public and private sector.

My passion for standards in education was seeded by my parents, both of whom were teachers. I chose to become a Governor at Chirton when my daughter came to the school in 2014, recognising that I have a wide range of skills that enable me to support excellent outcomes for the whole school community. I was elected Chair of the Governing Body in 2015.

I have worked within the rail industry since leaving university 24 years ago. My role for the past 14 of those years has been leading the special events planning team within a local train company covering the South West of England and South Wales.

My interest within the school started with the enrolment of my son, but has developed through volunteering at various events and helping out with the Forest School sessions across all three classes. It was not only the dedication and professionalism of the staff and existing Governing body, but the enthusiasm and energy of the pupils that led me to put my name forward as a Parent Governor when the opportunity arose.

I have been a teacher at a large Primary school in Swindon for over 20 years. My first introduction to Chirton School was in 2012 when I came to the school as Acting Head. This was the period of time when the governors were fighting to keep the school open. I was proud to help Chirton School through an OFSTED inspection and to hand the school over to the very capable hands of Richard and Amy. I wanted to maintain a connection to this s fantastic school so became a governor.

I have a passion for teaching, having taught in both Key Stage 1 and 2 classes. Recently I studied for the National Award for Special Educational Needs Coordination which I was awarded earlier this year

After reading Physics at Leicester University I did a PGCE and taught Physics and Science in a secondary school for two years before moving into residential social work, working for the Catholic Children’s Society and then Barnardo’s. I then went to Theological College, completing a second degree in Theology. I was ordained in 1993.

I’ve been involved in school governance for nearly 25 years being a governor of a secondary school and 4 different primary school (one for 20 years) before moving to Wiltshire. I’ve always seen education and work with schools as being extremely important and something that I’ve given a high priority to. At the moment I am on 4 governing bodies and my role is rather limited because of the time that I am able to give to each one. I hope that when a new colleague is appointed, I will be able to share these joys and thus have more time for to devote to schools and governance.

I have worked for a large manufacturing company for the last 27 years holding various leadership positions and I am currently responsible for the manufacturing operation in the UK.

Having always lived locally my family has a close association to the school with my uncle and brother both attending many years ago.

I was given the opportunity to become a Governor to the ‘little school with the big heart’ in 2019 and I hope my leadership skills can help the school continue to thrive in the coming years.
