Courage

Welcome to the ‘Class of Courage’.

After moving on through the school, pupils in Year 5 and 6 complete their final years in Courage Class before taking the next big step on their educational journey. At the top of the school, there is still much to learn, however the fun never stops. With a huge focus and emphasis on building in prior knowledge whilst working towards the end of Y6 SATs, pupils study a wide range of topics and use their cross-curricular skills to delve into many wonderful worlds, past and present.

This year, we will discover the significant impact of exploration across the world, use fine motor skills to chop, slice and dice a range of ingredients during our Design and Technology alongside expertise from Lavington Secondary School, reflect on the ever changing environment and make changes to help our planet, use historical evidence to learn about the impact of World War II and marvel at the wonderful world of the Aztecs. The learning is challenging and rewarding, with pupils being supported by the class teacher and full time Teaching Assistant. Pupils feel safe in Courage Class and feel comfortable to step outside of their comfort zone on their way to becoming the best that they can be.

The school’s learning intentions (6R’s) are again, a key focus for us as we put in place the building blocks for the children so they are ready to move on and become greater independent learners. Although Home Learning is considered a choice where children can earn credits to spend on special things in school, we highly recommended that those, especially in Year 6, begin a routine of completing their work at home in preparation for Secondary School. This is done with support from home and the class teacher.

Reading is still really important within the class and this is evident in the range of fiction and non-fiction literature children read throughout the term. Certificates and awards are presented regularly for those reading at home and practicing those key reading skills.

As we are the older members of the school community, many of the children have extra special responsibilities which include House Captains, leaders of the School Council and Digital Leaders. Some of us also become Reading Buddies and support other children in the school with their reading. We also represent the school in a variety of activities from sport to music and reading.

As always, there is lots of support for Courage Class and we really do appreciate every ounce. Here is to another exciting journey.

And so the adventure begins…

Best wishes,

Mr Parmenter, Mrs Gay, Miss McCarthy and the children of Courage Class
